WEE WILLETTS MEET THEIR HERO

Former Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs star and the now Tour professional Danny Willett shows youngsters what to aspire to when he presented medals and prizes to the “Wee Willett” at Phoenix GC.

Danny took time to show his skills by striking balls off the 1st tee to the delight of all the officials, parents and players, then posed for pictures and signed visors and balls donated by Danny's sponsor Callaway.

The “Wee Willetts” is designed to introduce young players to golf. The concept was developed by Phoenix, Sitwell Park and Bondhay golf clubs whose junior organisers joined forces to help budding young golfers make the transition from ‘pre-junior’ golf on academy courses to experience playing on real golf courses. Danny Willett was contacted through his links with Bondhay where he was a junior and he was delighted to accept the offer to become patron of the event and to allow his name to be used to promote the competition. The ‘Wee Willetts’ was born and the first events were staged in 2010.

Participating clubs encouraged young boys and girls between five and 12 years old to enter the event who didn’t have handicaps off the standard tees. It was decided to hold three ‘round robin’ matches using the ‘Texas Scramble’ format where each team consisted of one player from each club.  The events held throughout the summer were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by the youngsters, their parents, the organisers and by members of the golf clubs, many of who commented on the way the youngsters conducted themselves on the golf course.

The scheme has delivered notable success this year in Brandon Perry - one of the 1st Wee Willetts from the start of the event – who was chosen for Yorkshire coaching due to his progress.

The dates for the 2015 matches are August 7th(Bondhay), Aug 15th (Phoenix)

And Aug 22nd (Sitwell Park).
