SENIORS SEAL VICTORY ON THE LAST HOLE

Sheffield Union’s seniors maintained an unbeaten run with a nail-biting 19-17 points victory over Halifax & Huddersfield.

The match played at Sitwell Park was evenly poised at 17-17 with the last match between SUGC team captain Richard Hodgkinson (pictured below) and Tom Hunt for the opposition still battling it out on the course.

Two up on the 16th, Richard hooked his tee shot into the trees, going back to just 1 up.

The tricky 17th, which requires a good shot from the difficult uphill approach, saw both players find the green and they shared the hole in par.

Tom’s drive down the last was well placed in the centre of the fairway, while Richard slightly drew the ball left onto an old tee surrounded by small saplings.

His opponent’s second shot hit the steep upslope to the green and fell back, which inspired the Sheffield captain to nail a superb iron shot to the middle of the green to the applause of all spectators. Tom chipped up some 10 feet short, Richard putted to within 18 inches, and Tom missed his putt, which saw Sheffield secure a narrow victory.

The win cements Sheffield’s place at the top of the Yorkshire Inter District Union League table with two matches remaining.
