PRESIDENT'S DAY A GREAT SUCCESS

A total of 25 teams made up of club officials, captains and members of the executive competed in the annual Sheffield Union of Golf Clubs Presidents Day in glorious sunshine at Wortley Golf Club.

With the course set up to testing standards for the scratch team match held later in the day players found scoring difficult. The winning team made up of John Leedale (Doncaster) Marie Watson (Chesterfield) Dave Abrams (Roundwood) and R Ashforth (Bawtry) scored 73 points in the Am-Am competition.

Mrs Watson, Captain of the Sheffield & District Ladies Golf Association, who accepted first prize on behalf of her team said: "I'd like to thank the President for a lovely day which has been enjoyed by everybody."

Runner up one point behind was a team comprising Steve Bell (SUGC exec) Jan North, David Cronshaw (Birley Wood) and Victor Glover (Wortley)

Third place also with 72 points was David Axe (Hallowes), D Boardman, Vickey Clarke (Bondhay) and Suzanne Ashmore (Tinsley Park).

Winners of the ladies' team prize were Wendy Chappell (Hallamshire) Susan Leach (Hickleton) and Patricia Booth (Phoenix).

SUGC President Martin Brewis, a member of Wortley, praised club officials and staff for their flawless efforts in helping him celebrate a day to remember.

He said: "I would like to thank the captain and everybody at Wortley for hosting my day. I have been a member here for more than 30 years and I've never seen it in such good condition. It has been a brilliant day for me and I would like to thank everybody who has been here to play and for everybody's support including, of course, the ladies at the halfway house who have been baking and preparing for days."

Dennis Clarke, member of the Executive, livened up the day by playing in customary fancy outfit, this year dressed as a leprechaun.
